Maryland's strategic location on the Atlantic Seaboard makes it an ideal base from which to serve the largest consumer and industrial markets in the United States. The state's location allows overnight trucking access to one third of the nation's population and buying income. In addition, Maryland has well-maintained interstate highways, including Interstates 95, 81, and 68, that offer easy access to significant markets to the north, south and west.

Maryland is a small, densely-populated state, ranking 42nd in size and 19th in population. It is home to the Washington-Baltimore-Northern Virginia Consolidated Statistical Area, anchored by neighboring Washington, D.C., the nation's capital, and Baltimore, Maryland's largest city.  Maryland has 23 counties in addition to Baltimore, the state's only independent city.
