Nearly 90 percent of Maryland's 5.6 million residents live in the densely populated corridor between Baltimore and Washington, D.C., which is part of the Washington-Baltimore-Northern Virginia Combined Statistical Area, the fourth most populous CSA in the nation. Jurisdictions with the greatest population densities include Baltimore City and neighboring Baltimore and Anne Arundel Counties, and Montgomery and Prince George's Counties.
Double Digit Population Increases Expected Throughout the State
According to the 2000 Census, Maryland's population has increased 10.8 percent since 1990, and is projected to increase by 11.3 percent through 2010.
Several counties are projected to experience growth rates of 20 percent or more during the current decade, including Carroll County in the Baltimore area; Frederick County in the Washington, D.C. area; Calvert, Charles and St. Mary's Counties in Southern Maryland; and Cecil and Queen Anne's Counties on the Eastern Shore.
